## The scenario

You are a high school student who has decided you want to work with marine mammals. You have found a university that appears to specialize in exactly that. You want to know what to apply to.

This is a real question that admissions offices receive constantly, and the honest answer is more complicated than the applicant expects.

## What you should see

The answer is not on one page. It is assembled from two:

- The **MS in Marine Mammal Science** page states that the program is graduate level and explains why

— the statistical methods assume a foundation that a four-year degree is where you get.

- The **BS in Marine Biology** page states that several specializations here are graduate programs

and that this degree is the route into them.

Neither page repeats the other's reasoning. A search that returns only the first tells you that you cannot apply. A search that returns only the second does not mention marine mammals at the point that matters. The useful answer requires both, and the response should name the graduate program, explain that it is not an undergraduate entry point, and identify the bachelor's degree as the route in.

**Watch for the citations.** The response should cite both pages. If it cites one, it has guessed the other half.

> **Which department operates the research vessel, and what research is done from it?**

Three pages again: the department page owns the relationship to the facility, the facility page describes the vessel, and the research overview lists what it supports. The relationship is stored in one direction only, so the system has to traverse rather than look up.

## Why this is the hard case

Keyword search does well when the answer sits on a page containing the words in the question. This question contains "marine mammals" and "apply", and the page that best answers it is largely about undergraduate biology. That gap is what semantic retrieval is for.
